Recycled Plastic

PET came into fame in the 1950s as a textile material. It is a kind of polyester material that has good barrier properties against oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Because of its strength, temperature tolerance and wrinkle-resistance qualities, PET is a perfect substitute for or addition to natural fibers such as silk, wool, and cotton. They are also used in synthetic fibers; beverage, food and other liquid containers such as plastic bottles. PET fabrics are strong, durable and also have good resistance to mineral oils, solvents, and acids.

Taking into consideration that plastic is a petroleum-based product, recycling plastics reduces dependency on oil. Therefore, plastic recycling program saves and protects the environment from the damages of non-degradable plastic. Plastic is now one of the most commonly recycled materials to be reused as a raw material for other products. Recycled plastic clothing is one way to limit the amount of plastics in the world. But how is plastic recycled into PET clothing?

Plastic bottles are sorted out; only those with number 1 identification code that has the PET characteristics.
At the processing plant, the caps and labels are removed; then, the bottles are separated by color.
The bottles are sterilized, crushed, and chopped into flake.
The flakes are poured into large mixing vats, where they are melted and stirred at high speeds until they turn into thick liquid that is extruded through a spinneret (a tube with small openings) to create fibrous, polyester strands. The holes size of the spinneret determines the thickness of the strands.
A machine then twists the fiber strands together to make long strands of recycled polyester yarn. The more filaments woven together, the thicker the finished yarn. The recycled polyester yarn is shipped and sold to the clothing manufacturers.
