Recycled Paper

Paper recycling is the process of manufacturing old paper products and converting them into new reusable paper products. This is one way of reducing the ecological footprint by lowering the total amount of waste produced and this process also saves trees. There are also trees that are grown for commercial use and planted to replace those cut down. This is the utmost reason why FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) came up; a system of certification that provides internationally standard-setting, trademark assurance, and accreditation services to organizations and communities interested in responsible forestry.

The keys to recycling are collecting large quantities of clean, well-sorted, uncontaminated, and dry paper. Paper is actually one of the easiest materials to recycle. The steps of paper recycling process are as follows:

-     Papers are collected from the curbside or recycling banks by waste management companies or local authorities.

-     They are sorted, graded, and delivered to a paper mill.

-     Once at the paper mill, water is added and then papers are turned into pulp.

-     Papers are then screened, cleaned, and de-inked through some processes until they are suitable for papermaking.

-     Finally, they are ready to be made into new paper products.

There are so many products that can be made out of recycled papers. Some of them are pencils, color pencils, pens, paper pads, and paper bags.

The most significant benefits of recycling papers are related to environmental issues.

-     By using waste papers to produce new papers, disposal problems are reduced.

-     For every ton of paper recycled, the savings are: 3,000-4,000 KWh electricity, 95 per cent of air pollution, and minimum of 30,000 liters of water.

-     Up to 14 per cent of landfill space and 17 trees can be saved by recycling a ton of paper.

-     Every time waste papers go to landfill and rot, they produce methane (a potent greenhouse gas that can increase the effect of global warming).

-     By having less new material for producing papers, more trees and landfill space can be saved for the sustainability of the environment.

-    Paper recycling uses less chemicals and bleaches, which is safer to the environment.
