Solar energy, together with Nuclear energy, is the most abundant source of energy on Earth. Sun energy has been used by human for thousands of years. Even though it is located 150 million kilometers away, it is so powerful that it is able to supply more than 10,000 times the energy that humans use yearly. It is the most renewable source of energy as it is scientifically believe that it will take billions of years before Sun run out of energy.

Harnessing of electric energy from Sun requires the use of Photovoltaic (PV) cell made of semi-conductors such as silicon. Photovoltaic refers to the excitation of electrons by photons of light from the sun, into a state of higher energy, allowing them to act as a charge carried for electric current. This process of converting solar energy to electric energy produces no pollutants and green house gases. Electric power generated can be used directly or fed into electrical grid.

Solar panel is a very cost effective method in producing electricity as the raw material required; sun light is free of charge. While high initial investment is required, it would eventually pay itself off. Furthermore, solar panel requires minimal maintainance as it does not contain any moving parts. A typical solar panel last about 20 years at least, a period more than enough to pay itself off. Coupled with the steady decline of price for the past 40 years, it is definitely a viable source of energy in the future.
